Beiden Teams ist die fehlende Wettkampfpraxis anzumerken. Das Spiel gestaltet sich zäh, die wenigen Beobachter im Goodison Park bekommen im ersten Durchgang nur wenige Offensivchancen zu sehen. Entsprechend wenig amüsiert zeigt sich auch Klopp.

Nach einer knappen halben Stunde verpasst Joel Matip die Führung, köpfelt knapp am rechten Pfosten vorbei. Es bleibt die beste Tormöglichkeit im ersten Durchgang.

Doch die Reds bleiben an diesem Abend zu wenig überzeugend. Kurz vor Schluss rettet Alisson mit zwei Glanzparaden seine Mannschaft sogar noch vor der Niederlage.
