Mit dem 3-0 gegen Southampton verbuchte Liverpool einen neuen Vereinsrekord. Noch nie zuvor konnten die Reds die ersten sieben Spiele der neuen Saison gewinnen. 

Trainer Jürgen Klopp meinte vor dem Spiel, dass die Mannschaft jeden Supporter brauche. Entsprechend gross war die Unterstützung während dem ganzen Spiel.

Zehn Minuten nach dem Anpfiff gingen die Reds durch ein Eigentor von Wesley Hoedt in Führung. Dieser lenkte eine Hereingabe von Xherdan Shaqiri in das eigene Tor ab.

Kurz vor der Halbzeit zimmerte Shaqiri einen Freistoss aus rund 30 Metern nur an die Latte. Mohamed Salah profitierte und haute den Abpraller in die Maschen.

Virgil van Dijk verletzte sich zu Beginn der zweiten Halbzeit und musste ausgewechselt werden. Klopp gab jedoch direkt nach dem Spiel Entwarnung.
