Beide Mannschaften starteten mit schnellem und attraktivem Fussball in die Partie. Zwar war Liverpool in den entscheidenenden Momenten tonangebend, trotzdem spielten auch die Eagles überraschend aggressiv und holten sich verloren geglaubte Bälle früh wieder zurück.

Erst kurz vor der Halbzeit gingen die Reds schliesslich in Führung. Mamadou Sakho holte Mohamed Salah im Strafraum von den Beinen, Schiedsrichter Michael Oliver zeigte umgehend auf den Punkt. James Milner verwandelte den Elfmeter sicher und ohne Probleme.

Eine Viertelstunde vor Schluss holte sich Aaron Wan-Bissaka eine rote Karte ab und erwies seiner Mannschaft einen Bärendienst. Der Youngster holte Salah kurz vor dem Strafraum im Alleingang von den Beinen und sah dafür zu recht den roten Karton.

Liverpool nutzte die Gelegenheit und legte kurz vor Schluss noch einmal nach. Sadio Mané umkurvte erst die gegnerische Defensive, bevor er an Hennessey vorbeizog und zum 2-0 in das leere Tor einschieben konnte.
